CAL-ICWA and Tribal Representatives Appointed to Citizens Review Panel

Posted on Dec 01, 2006

CAL-ICWA and a group of tribal representatives advocated for and received additional slots on the Citizens Review Panel.  Panel slots were increased from 1 to 5 persons representing tribal interests.  The new Citizens Review Panel members are:  Nanette Gledhill, CAL-ICWA; Angelina Arroyo (Habematolel Pomo of Upper Lake); Marce Becerra (Cloverdale Rancheria of Pomo Indians); Percy Tejada (Dry Creek Rancheria of Pomo Indians).  We are still in need of one more tribal representative, preferably from Southern California.

The objective of the Citizens Review Panel (CRP) is to ensure there is a review body that examines the state level Child Welfare Services system.  The statewide CRP determined their governance structure, decided that they will conduct a focused review on three safety objectives in the Program Improvement Plan including disproportionality, and requested that the California Department of Social Services provide them with a wide variety of data and presentations on various topics related to the their review, and county assessment forms related to Child Welfare Services.  In it’s advisory role, the statewide CRP will integrate a primary prevention/early intervention perspective to its review of statewide Child Welfare Services policies, practices, and procedures.
