Information for email to tribal representatives

Posted on Jul 13, 2007

The Juvenile Delinquency Court Assessment (JDCA) Project is reviewing general delinquency court processes, court collaboration with justice system partners, adequacy of juvenile court facilities, and overall stakeholder and participant satisfaction with the juvenile justice system. Along those lines, staff is conducting focus groups and/or interviews with various juvenile justice stakeholders, hopefully to include tribes and their representatives as system partners and members of our communities.

Below are questions we would like to ask tribal representatives since we have been unable to arrange a formal focus group. Please respond via email, inserting your answers below the individual questions, or to discuss the issues in person call LaRon Hogg, Delinquency Attorney, at laron.hogg@jud.ca.gov or 415-865-8834. Given our project time constraints, we would appreciate responses by July 27, 2007.

1. On the whole, in your specific jurisdiction, do you feel tribes’ needs are being met by the court in cases where either the juvenile or the victim is Native American? Does the court encourage participation in hearings by properly noticing, being accessible?
2. Are you or your representatives included in stakeholder meetings, multi-disciplinary collaborations, etc....?
3. How well does the court match youth to appropriate services or sanctions in your community? Is the court, and are other juvenile justice stakeholders, culturally competent and appropriate when working with tribes?
4. Does the court access the best available services for Native American youth through the tribe when possible?
5. Overall, are you satisfied with the court (e.g. how it relates to you, responds to your requests, communicates with you)?
